Facts About Module Reduction Technology(TM)

Before module reduction, the Tektronix logic analyzer required four TLA7BB4 logic analyzer modules for full analysis of DDR3 at speeds of DDR3-1600 and DDR3-1867 and two TLA7BB4 modules for full analysis of DDR3 at speeds of DDR3-1333 and slower. With the introduction of module reduction techniques, the number of logic analyzer modules was reduced from four to two for DDR3-1600 & DDR3-1867 and from two to one for DDR3-1333 and slower. This reduction is derived completely in software by customizing the analyzer's internal resources in a unique and proprietary way. All logic analyzer features available to the end user are completely preserved with no feature limitations. The following facts on software module reduction may be of interest.

Facts About Software Module Reduction (MR) Technology(TM)
1. Module reduction software is completely transparent to the user. There are absolutely no special settings or choices required to use module reduction. Data is displayed correctly without any added intervention by the user.

2. SODIMM acquisition is NEVER effected by module reduction. Data is acquired and viewable - simultaneously - from each rank for every possible state of the DDR3 bus. To put it another way, there is absolutely no penalty for using module reduction with your SODIMM target.

3. DIMM acquisition is NEVER effected by module reduction for single and dual rank DIMMs. Just as with the SODIMMs, data is acquired and viewable - simultaneously - for each rank. Again, there is absolutely no penalty for using module reduction with your single or dual rank targets and DIMMs.

4. Are you working with power down states in a quad rank DIMM? Probably not, but if you are, please give us a call as there are unique challenges in this environment.

5. No qualifier sideband signals are required which would otherwise force double-probing and increase the load on the DDR3 target.

6. If you already own a Nexus interposer, module reduction can be implemented with a software update.

Nexus Technology has a family of products for your DDR3 debug application offering high speed connection and data analysis. From DDR3 interposers, NEXVu validation DIMMs (VDIMMS), embedded supports, chip interposers, to protocol violation software, Nexus Technology has the DDR3 product line to fully support your needs.

This document shows how to solder P7500 tips to the oscilloscope version of a Nexus DDR3/DDR2 component interposer board. The oscilloscope interposers feature embedded 100-ohm resistors located very close to each BGA ball of the memory device, to isolate the analog signal integrity impact of the interposer channel. New TriMode(TM) solder tips (020-3022-00) are available to match the P7500 Series probes to the Nexus interposers. Trademark belongs to Tektronix, Inc.

Nexus Technology Announces DDR3-1867 Family of Digital & Analog Validation Products

"Nexus Technology, Inc., a leading provider of digital & analog validation products for DDR3, announces the industry’s first DDR3-1867 DIMM & embedded DDR3 memory design, debug, & validation products for use with Tektronix logic analyzers & oscilloscopes"

Nexus Technology today introduced Tektronix support for DDR3-1867 DIMM and embedded acquisition. This release provides the industry’s most robust and complete digital and analog validation platform for DDR3 using TLA7000 logic analyzers, DPO/DSA70000B & DPO7000 oscilloscopes, the NEX-DDR3INTR-HS DDR3 DIMM slot interposer, DDR3 NEXVu VDIMMs, or DDR3 component interposers.

The DDR3 standard supports data rates from 800- to 1867-MT/s with clock frequencies from 400- to 933MHz. DDR3 is ideal for high-performance applications such as file servers, video-on-demand, encoding and decoding, gaming, and 3D visualization.

Nexus Technology’s DDR3-1867 NEX-DDR3INTR-HS DIMM slot interposer allows for easy testing and digital validation of different DDR3 DIMMs. Nexus Technology’s DDR3-1867 NEXVu VDIMM provide non-intrusive probing and the industry's lowest DIMM acquisition BER (bit-error-ratio) allowing the VDIMMs to work in the widest possible range of targets - minimizing customer risk during first power-ons and debug. Nexus Technology’s DDR3-1867 component interposers provide easy access to the DDR signals for use in embedded designs and can be easily swapped between logic analyzer and oscilloscope component interposers for flexible, extremely accurate, and reliable digital and analog validation. Multiple component interposers can be used as one acquisition system to rebuild up to a 32-bit DDR3 data bus. All of these products come with the industry's fastest and easiest setup software - DDR3 SPA threshold & sample point analyzer. Also available for these products is the DDR3 Protocol Violation software, providing proven modeling and error reporting of DDR3 protocol.

"DDR is pervasive. From small hand-held devices through large scale computer servers, Nexus’ family of products provide complete support from individual memory component analysis in embedded applications through multi-DIMM unbuffered, registered, or SMI analysis in servers," said Robert Shelsky, President Nexus Technology, Inc.

All interposers are available for immediate delivery.

Additional information on these products can be found at www.nexustechnology.com.

Nexus Technology is the industry’s premier supplier of digital and analog validation products for DDR3. Nexus Technology is a recognized provider of tools to Intel Corporation, an Embedded System Tools Partner of Tektronix Inc. since 1991, and is a member of JEDEC, RapidIO and PCI-SIG.

New Product Release - DDR3 Component Interposers

Nexus Technology recommends DDR3 component interposer for applications requiring optimal digital and analog validation of speeds above DDR3-1600 or for embedded applications, in general. These interposers allow for logic analyzer and/or oscilloscope acquisition of command, address, read, and write data of x4, x8 and/or x16 DDR3 memory components at speeds in excess of DDR3-1600 and provide visibility of the DDR3 signals as seen by the memory components.

Application Note - Debugging Timing Problems with a Logic Analyzer

Tek.com: In today's digital world, embedded systems are more complex than ever. With the use of faster speeds, lower power devices and more powerful logic, they are becoming increasingly sensitive to signal integrity issues. This application note will discuss how to solve timing related issues by using common logic analyzer features and capabilities to quickly and easily get to the root of your design problem.
